Genesis

The journey starts from the LBD, “little black dress”, the Coco Chanel creation that became a global hit.

“Thanks to me, they [non-wealthy] can walk around feeling like millionaires.” (Coco Chanel) 

This quote caught Charlene’s attention and made her angry. The Fashion system thinks in terms of ‘Idealized Identities’ and ‘Outer Appearances’. It looks at bodies as surfaces onto which a visual image and immaterial concept is projected. As a society, we do not just label the dress but we also label who is wearing it! So she asks herself, how are we actually feeling under the dress? How is the media affecting our impulses and intentions?

Charlene wants to hear about the desire we have towards new clothes, about the fantasies we have about a well-dressed version of us and how we try to resist Fast Fashion and how maybe we don’t resist it at all. 

Why do we shop for what we don’t need? How can we find alternative routes to dance around the ego of fashion and find new ways to dissolve the structures it imposes? What happens if we have to swap dresses between the participants during the workshops? Can we hear each others’ stories without judgment?

The participants are encouraged to bring with them:

• writing material,
• a black dress (any) (if not possible, some will be provided), 
• tools to knit, stick, paint or stitch (if not possible, some will be provided)
• other material that can be fun and of no use
• personal or imagined stories of desire for this ‘new dress’ you do not have.

You will need these to remake and alter the “little black dress” and turn into a personal statement. We will collectively write a new label for the garment and for ourselves.

Through movement, we will explore all uneasy feelings such as discomfort, doubt, upset, desperation, uneasiness, panic, jumpiness; but we will also express the humour, the absurdity and unreasonable actions that characterize this love for Fashion. We will try to define both the wonderful and the grotesque, the sense of solitude and that of community. In other words, its contradictions.

Join us for a 5-days long workshop and a performance of 20 minutes or so and bring your perspective, your body, your identity and your stories.

The Artist:

Charlene Galea is a multi-disciplinary artist whose body often navigates between online identity and physical experiences. Concepts are mostly presented through performance, in which clothes and movement act as a metaphor to narrate how the body is experienced within contemporary times – focusing on the female identity, the effect of the media and its communication, space, and human relations. In her installations or site specific live performances, Charlene often challenges the viewer to immerse in the experience of being present, rather than simply consuming that which is presented. Complex political ideas are usually presented with a healthy dose of humor in the aim of positively influencing various groups of people within society – especially those who are not art connoisseurs. 

Currently her interest revolves around how to involve the community into her performative projects not just as spectators but as well as participants.

Il viaggio comincia con la “Petite Robe Noire”, il piccolo tubino nero, la creazione di Coco Chanel che ha ottenuto fama mondiale.

“Grazie a me, loro [i non-benestanti] possono andare in giro sentendosi dei milionari.” (Coco Chanel) 

Questa frase ha catturato l’attenzione di Charlene e l’ha fatta arrabbiare. Il mondo della moda pensa in termini di ‘Identità idealizzate’ e di ‘Apparenze’. Guarda ai corpi come

superfici sulle quali proiettare un’ immagine e un concetto immateriale. La nostra società dà un’etichetta al vestito ma anche a chi lo indossa! è così che si chiede, come ci sentiamo davvero sotto al vestito? Come ci influenzano i media nei nostri impulsi e nelle nostre intenzioni?

Charlene vuole sapere del nostro desiderio verso i vestiti nuovi, delle fantasie che abbiamo verso una versione benvestita di noi stessx e di come resistiamo le tentazioni della Fast Fasion o di come non resistiamo affatto. 

Perchè compriamo quello che non ci serve? Come possiamo trovare alternative per danzare intorno all’ego della moda e trovare nuovi modi per dissolvere le strutture che impone? Cosa succederebbe se ci scambiassimo i vestiti fra partecipanti? Siamo capaci di ascoltare le storie l’unx dell’altrx senza giudicarci?

Lu partecipanti sono invitatx a portare con sè:

• materiale per scrivere,
• un vestito nero (qualunque) (se non ne avete alcuni verranno forniti), 
• materiale per cucire, incollare, dipingere r intrecciare (se non ne avete alcuni verranno forniti)
• altro materiale che sia divertente o inutile
• storie personali or inventate di desiderio per questo ‘vestito nuovo’ che ancora non avete

Avrai bisogno di questi materiali per ricreare ed alterare il “Piccolo Tubino Nero” e trasformarlo in una dichiarazione personale. Collettivamente, scriveremo una nuova etichetta per l’abito e per noi stessx.

Attraverso il movimento, esploreremo tutti i sentimenti di disagio come la scomodità, il dubbio, la disperazione, il panico ed il nervosismo; ma esprimeremo anche la comicità, l’assurdità e le azioni insensate che caratterizzano il nostro amore per la moda. Proveremo a definire sia il meraviglioso che il grottesco, il senso di solitudine e quello di comunità. In altre parole, le sue contraddizioni. 

Unisciti per un workshop di 5 giorni e per una performance pubblica di 20 minuti; porta la tua prospettiva, il tuo corpo, la tua identità, le tue storie.

L’Artista:Charlene Galea è un’artista multidisciplinare il cui corpo naviga spesso tra identità virtuale ed esperienze fisiche. I suoi concetti sono presentati per la maggior parte attraverso lo strumento della performance, in cui i vestiti ed il movimento fungono da metafora per narrare come il corpo è vissuto in questi anni, con un focus sull’identità femminile, sugli effetti dei media e della loro comunicazione, sullo spazio e le relazioni umane. Nelle sue installazioni e performances site-specific dal vivo, Charlene sfida lo spettatore ad immergersi nell’esperienza di rimanere presente, piuttosto che limitarsi a consumare quel che gli viene presentato. Complesse idee politiche sono spesso presentate con una sana dose di umorismo con lo scopo di influenzare positivamente vari gruppi nella nostra società -specialmente chi di arte non s’intende. Al momento i suoi interessi riguardano le comunità e come coinvolgerle nei suoi progetti performativi, non solo come spettatrici ma anche come partecipanti.
